In this procedure, the provider removes a portion of the thoracic vertebra called the lamina and selectively cuts some fibers of the spinothalamic tracts, the pain conducting pathways originating in the spinal cord. The provider performs this procedure in two stages, performing the second stage within 14 days. During the second stage, the provider repeats the same procedure on the opposite side of the spinal cord.
