This procedure is for the excision of the labyrinth, or the part of the inner ear that contains the organs for both hearing and balance. The procedure involves destruction of the semicircular canals, the utricle, and the saccule to remove the diseased labyrinth from the remaining vestibular system. A provider performs this procedure to treat a patient with no hearing in an ear, which is causing vertigo, or dizziness.
