I have LCSWs who are treating anxiety using the F06.4 ICD-10-CM code. Per the guidelines, we are to code first the underlying physiological condition. The problem is the LCSWs are feeling uncomfortable having to include a medical dx since they are not treating it.

Is there another option?

I'd try framing the conversation with the LCSW as that the additional diagnosis isn't indicating that they are treating the physiological condition. Rather, it is painting the full picture.

They're treating "Anxiety due to {condition}." If they don't state what {condition} is, then they aren't telling the full story of the patient's anxiety.

(And if they're not treating "Anxiety due to {condition}", why are they using the F06.4 anxiety code?)
