I have been searching and searching and I can not find anything that gives a clear definitive distinction between an Excisiona Biopsy, 19120, and a Lumpectomy, 19301. Both take the entire lesion with a small amount of normal tissue, and both can be used in benign cases.. Does anyone know what circumstances determine whether it should be one or the other?

Thanks!!!

I agree. If they just remove the lump then the code is 19120, however if the physician excises the breast tumor AND a margin of normal tissue than use 19301. I know alot of the time our physicians will document that they did a lumpectomy but if no extra tissue was remove I just code 19120.
