When the rumors first started about updates to E/M coding I mentioned it to the physician I work for. I commented that it sounded great for him due to less repeat work documenting H&P etc. He commented at the time that it was actually going to be worse for him. I didn't understand what he meant. Since then he's been telling our biller that come 2021 he will only be able to see patients for one complaint per office visit. He's a specialist and board certified in 2 specialties and often addresses more than one issue today per office visit.

I don't recall seeing ANYTHING that will limit him being able to address multiple complaints in one office visit. Does anyone know what he's referring to? Thanks!

There is nothing of the sort in the changes that have been approved for 2021. In fact, the number and complexity of problems addressed increase the MDM and codes can be chosen based on MDM alone (history or examination are not separate components). You can help your physician and biller by sharing the information posted by the AMA at https://www.ama-assn.org/practice-management/cpt/cpt-evaluation-and-management.

I hope that helps.
