I know that we can't bill for the initial OBS code because we were not the ones that put the patient in OBS status. However, there is some confusion about the subsequent codes. Would we continue to bill the est visit codes like 99215 or would we bill the subsequent OBS codes like 99226?

** This is just a general question, the actual levels of the code will vary depending on the documentation.

referencing CMS manual 30.6.8:
The admitting provider/service only bills the admit & subsequent OBS codes (such as 99224-99226), while all other physicians who furnish consultations or additional evaluations or services while the patient is receiving hospital outpatient observation services must bill the appropriate outpatient service codes (99215, etc.)
