When the description of a procedure code includes the words "under anesthesia", is it appropriate to append the -52 modifier to the service if the service is done with out anesthesia? I have done a lot of research and can not find a conclusive answer. Based on the information that I have found, CPT is not clear on this and there are many differing opinions on the web. I would appreciate any additional information on this subject. Thank you!

It would help to know exactly which procedure you are talking about, but in general, NO.

If the procedure is performed NOT under general anesthesia, then you would usually include this in the E/M service. (for example 15850 - removal of sutures under anesthesia)
