if the doctor does a pta on the right side and the next week he does the left side is that considered a staged procedure even though
its on a different side ???? he wants to know if he should say staged on his op notes
any help????
TIA

It is not a staged procedure if the second procedure is treating a different anatomical area or a different problem. Staged procedures are procedure that are either a more extensive procedure that is required when the initial procedure did not fully resolve the problem, or a second procedure planned initially as an additional phase of the treatment plan, such as the removal of temporary hardware that was placed initially. In this situation, I believe modifier 79 would be more appropriate.
