My company has recently started billing for a pain management clinic and they do both a urine and a saliva test to test for multiple drug classes. My question is, since both tests are testing the the same drug classes, am I allowed to bill out each drug class from each test twice or can I only bill the drug class once? I understand that I am only allowed to bill 13 total units, but currently we are only able to bill out 9, since we are not billing the two tests out seperate. Can someone who has maybe run into this issue please give their thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

Rogers,

I have been billing for pain practices since '92. It sounds like you have a problem. The short answer is no, you can't bill for the same drug class screens on the same day. Why are they doing two types of screens? Could one screen be testing for say six sets of drug classes and the other screen be testing for seven DIFFERENT drug classes? They you could bill for thirteen.
