Hello All,

my CPC coding instructor told us the following:

90804,90806,90808 are to be used by MFT, SW, Psy., Ph.D

90805,90807,90809 are to be used by M.D

Would this be correct? What constitutes a "M.D." (no jokes:)) because I was thinking a psychologist could use the "M.D." codes.

curiously,

a Phd doesn't have authority to prescribe medication. The 05, 07 & 09 codes have E&M componets so it has to be a provider that can perform that type of service. Hope that helps.

Psychotherapy codes - what providers

Chiming in a bit late here, but - additionally, an M.D., P.A., ANP (we call them our prescribers) can do the 90804, 90806 and 90808, as well as, the odd numbered codes. 90805, 90807 and 90909 can only be coded if there is an E&M component, such as prescribing or discontinuing medication or changing dosage. If the visit is primarily for medication managment with minimal psychotherapy, then the code usually should be 90862.

So could an ARNP also bill for these codes?
What if there were "indirect supervision provided by MD"
