My billing office recieved a denial for a behaviorial health visit. The patient has Wisconsin Medical Assistance insurance and the reason for the denial is because they need a correct modifier. The codes used were cpt 90834 and ICD 9 309.0. I am unable to review the notes due to restrictions, the provider is a couselor for behavior health so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. If anyone has any in put that would be great because I am stumpted.

They are more than likely looking for a modifier for the type of license the counselor has. These are in the HCPCS book. For example, if it was a clinical social worker you should append the -AJ modifier.
