is it appropriate to bill the 92551, screening test, pure tone, air only with the child's yearly well check?

Hearing and vision screens provided as part of the well visit are reported separately. CPT guidelines outline that "screening tests identified with specific CPT codes are reported separately" from the preventive medicine codes.

We bill these in addition to the well visit codes.

It's important to point out that although CPT guidelines may allow for separate reporting, many commercial payers' coverage criteria doesn't allow separate payment. (Visual acuity screenings also tend to deny). Check your contracts to see if it's something that you're able to bill, before sending any appeals. Hope that helps! ;)

I agree, we do bill separately. Some insurances pay in full others pay very little or nothing at all. Its an additional code to the sick or wcc visit.
