Usually an oral challenge is to test for penicillin and the patient is given an oral penicillin. However, Provider gave an injection of Ancef (an antibiotic) and I am wondering if I could billing the 95076 (Oral Challenge) code? Is there another code that would be better? I can not find one. Any help and would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

95076 includes 120 minutes of testing time. Minimum of 62 minutes. I assume this is because if a substance is orally ingested the assessment/monitoring activities for allergic reaction need that much time as the substance works through the digestive tract. An injection may not take so long to get a response?
If 61 minutes or less is the time involved then CPT says to report an E&M code.
What was the time documented from beginning to end of the test? You may have to report an E&M and an injection code.
