I generally do not bill for hospital visits and am questioning whether or not there is a code for an extended ED visit. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

No ER visits are not timed based, there is no way to augment an ER visit, you may not upcode either. As a wise person once said, it is what it is.

Unfortunately, time is not a component of Emergency Department E/M codes, therefore, no extended or prolonged care can be reported. Emergency Dept. codes are based on documentation of the 3 key components and nature of the presenting problem. The only time would be a factor for ED E/M coding would be if Critical Care services were provided.
