Can anyone help me with the guidelines for ABNs? We are currently on an EMR and it is requiring an abn for hemoccult slides. Due to this being a screening but covered by Medicare once a year, is this why an ABN is being generated?

It could have to do with the diagnosis you are code you have chosen for the wellness. Below is Medicare's guide for the stool testing and for ABN rules:

This is the full Preventative Service Guide from CMS... it's 298 pages, but on page 183 starts the Colon Cancer Screening part. It will give you the covered diagnosis, frequency, HCPCS codes etc.

This is a MLN article that will give info on ABNs and were to find the ABN in the Medicare Claims Processing Manual.
