I am looking for guidelines on adding the HIV status of a pt on the HCFA 1500 form. Pt has come in and has informed the provider that she has just been tested positive for HIV and brings in documentation to support. Should I add this to the claim or not? I cannot find any solid documentation if in the sate of California is ok to report it, only who should be screened. Any insight would be great, thank you

I f the physician documents the patient is HIV positive then it is appropriate to code it.
