If mcr paid 80% and 20% is left with no secondary payer. Is the bill sent to the patient? My co-worker is under the impression that the balance is written off. She informed me that there is a word used for the write off. Do anyone knows what she is referring too?

Thanks in advance,

If the patient has medicare and no secondary then the pateint is billed for the 20%. It is illegal to routinely write off the patient's coinsurance or deductible. IF the patient can prove a financial hardship then the coinsurance could be written off, but this should be very rare. Check the Medicare billing manual and the OIG website for more information and for the penalties associated with routinely writing off the patient's portion of charges.
