I am going to be starting my first job as a Medical Billing Specialist next week. I have recently obtained my CPC-A certification in February. I am very nervous about starting out on this career path. I would welcome any advice people might have on how to be successful or comfort from people that have been in this position when starting out. I am confident I can do the job, but terrified of failure.

First off, congratulations on obtaining your CPC-A certification and getting hired as quickly as you did! That is quite an accomplishment in itself! It took me almost a year to get a job in healthcare after I got my certification.

I know exactly how you feel about being very nervous on starting this career path. I felt the exact same way when I started out here at my job. I, too, was terrified of failing. It's only human to feel that way, in my opinion. It took me a good couple of months to get comfortable in my new position with each passing day after my first week feeling less and less terrified of failing. I still have really bad days on occasion where I feel like I really messed up. But, for the most part, my days aren't going badly like I had first thought they might. The more you do it, the more confident you'll get and the less terrified you'll most likely be.

Congratulations. This can be a rewarding and lucrative career. You will learn something new every day.
I've been managing healthcare staff (including billers and coders) for 30 years. You will make mistakes. It's ok. There's nothing that you could do that can't be fixed. And when you make errors....you learn.
Stay on top of your continuing education. Volunteer to learn new tasks. Attend your local chapter meetings. Know that you will second guess yourself, and don't be afraid to do the research necessary to find the correct answer.

There are a lot of directions you can take in this field, so starting out in billing is an excellent opportunity. Become an expert in the revenue cycle, and belive me--you will never worry about a job again.

Congratulations!! I obtained my CPC-A in March and I have not been able to secure a job yet. I wish you well as you embark on your new career.
