If we code the aftercare codes V54.__, is it going to effect our reimbursement for those patient's not in a Global? Thank you, Mary Madrigal mmadrigal@hawaii.rr.com

Yes, it will. Read carefully the guidelines at the beginning of the ICD-9 book and it will tell you what are the appropriate V-codes to use during global and outside of global.
why would you use aftercare codes for patients not in global?
I use aftercare codes all the time and have never had an issue-unless- it is work comp or other 3rd party claim that pay by dx only
I use aftercare codes for patients not in global who are healing fx that did not require any surgical tx.
ex: V54.12 at the beginning of this section it says" assign for follow-up and tx during the healing phase of the fracture, an aftercare code should be used for all subsequent encounters after the initial encounter for care of a fracture"
I have never seen anything stating they can only be used for patient in global? Did I miss something??
