hi,
i know according to the guidelines if patient has a known prior diagnosis of an HIV related illness code 042 should be coded.

but, what if the dr. only writes HIV and not AIDS? can we still use 042 or do we need to query MD to document?

if you have no documentation of any prior HIV related illness then you would have to use V08, however if you know the patient has had AIDs or any other HIV illness then you would need to query the physician to document this in the patient's history.
