Am I correct in my understanding that alcohol and other substance use/abuse/disorders are not to be reported amongst a list of diagnoses that providers document as cause and effect, but no mental/behavioral disorders?

Whatever the provider assess as final dx code it. Some providers just list substance abuse and do not define if it is ...alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, cocaine,pills.....that bugs me. But if mention it in documentation use the dx listing what specific problem is. I have seen provider add Depression F32 or F41 Anxiety or F43.12 PTSD or the dx block of R45 symptoms of nerve problems and Insomnia G47 too if documented if part of pts illness. If 2 dx are in conflict the Excludes 1 rule will pop up in edit to flag you. If the provider mentiosn the pt. was in psych ward like years ago I pop Z86.59 as last dx code.
I hope helped you understand.
