At what point would a finger or toe beconsidered an amputation?? Dr states that the pt had a distal phalanx open fracture and disruption of the nail.

Would an amputation be considered if the he surgically removed part of the finger down to the first joint? Or even if the patient's injury removed down to the first joint? Is a finger tip considered a partial amputation?

Thanks!

I think that for it to be considered "amputation" that actual bony tissue needs to be removed. But I'm not totally sure about this. So if someone else has an opinion, I welcome them.

I agree, as I understand it, bone has to be removed (more than just debridement for opn fx)
My Hand Surgeon said the bony ends should be shortened in order to bill for the amputation. Otherwise it would be the debride & closure as dictated.
