Could someone please advise what the date of service would be if anesthesia is administered on 10/6/12 at 23:56 but the actual surgery is not performed until 12:05 on 10/7/12? The hospital coders state that since the patient was in the OR and anesthesia was started at 23:56 the procedure has to be abstracted as being on 10/6/12, the professional coders disagree, they believe the procedure should be coded when the actual surgery was performed 10/7/12. Are they both right? Can the UB04 have 10/6/12 and the CMS 1500 have 10/7/12?

Thanks,
Lori, CPC, CPC-H

The date of service for an anesthesia claim is the date the service was initiated. If your anesthesia start time is 23:59 on 10/7 and end time is 03:05 on 10/8, your date of service is 10/7.
