If the anesthesiologist is billing the surgical procedure with an ASA can moderate sedation be billed also? We are getting denials from Medicare and Medicaid stating that a modifier is needed or that the moderate sedation is incidental. Any ideas?

The moderate sedation codes are to be used if the surgeon is performing the procedure and administering the anesthesia for the procedure.
If there is an Anesthesiologist on the case then the moderate sedation codes should not be used by the surgeon.
