Hello.

I recently completed an online medical coding course from Career Step. This past weekend, I took the CPC exam and passed; however, I have the "A" at the end of my certification. I was under the impression that my course completed information was a "given" but now am understanding from the AAPC website that I need to submit my transcript. But what I do not understand is that I also have to submit a letter from my employer stating that I have 1 year experience? I feel like I have missed something and am hoping someone can explain the process to me, please.

Thank you.

Apprentice removal requires 2 years of experience. Education can substitute for 1 year of that.

The remaining 1 year would need to come from either work experience or Practicode.

You can read more about that on the AAPC website here: https://www.aapc.com/apprentice/applied-experience.aspx

So, everyone who takes the CPC exam needs 2 years of experience? I think that might be the part that I was failing to understand. I haven't heard of my coworkers needing to submit paperwork from our employer. Thank you for the explanation.

You can take the CPC exam without 2 years of experience. There will be an apprentice designation (CPC-A) until the equivalent of 2 years of experience is submitted.

(Whether that's 2 years work experience or 1 year education/1 year work experience or 1 year education + Practicode, etc.)

If you have 1 year experience and you have take CPC course through AAPC with still doing practicode , will it be acceptable?

I think the first reply from @sls314 answers this question and also provides a link to the AAPC webpage about it.

Question: If I have been teaching HIM courses on the college level for 5+ years to include ICD-10, CPT, reimbursement methodologies, CDI, documentation management, etc. Would that qualify as the 2 years of experience that I need to remove the A from my CPC?
