Wiki Are all External Cause Codes Required by payers?

Our system has a limited number of spaces for diagnosis coding and we are challenged with some of the larger surgeries at our burn centers to be able to code all areas to the necessary level of specificity while also adding all the external cause codes. Can we leave off some of them or all of them and still be able to submit? Or are there state regs that require the external cause codes for Physician billing as well as facility billing?
