Does anyone have any "guidelines" on documentation requirements by CMS for assistant at surgery? I have what was published in the October 2009 Coding Edge but I was looking for more. The CMS Surgery Manual didn't provide anything that I could find anyway.

Thanks,

Randa

Assistant Surgery

I contacted the Surgery Association in Washington DC. They have a book that details for each surgery performed who will be paid. When I was in GYN, I used this often. It didn't cost much, but was a valuable tool. Good luck, S. Oliver, CPC-I, CPMA

CMS guidelines are very vague, I'm sure you have found all there is to find.

They say there has to be documentation of the medical necessity of an assistant at surgery and they have to actively participate. The great debate comes from what does this mean. There are a lot of posts on this forum about this subject.

Hopefully your providers aren't as resistant as some and will take the published advice on how to apply the vague guidelines we are given. Jan 2008 Coding Edge has a good article in it as well.

Good luck,

Laura, CPC, CEMC
