My OB-GYN saw a patient in the ED for vulvar swelling. He examined the patient and decided to do an I & D of the vulur mass. He performed an I&D however no fluid was expressed from the incision. Can he bill for the I & D and if he can, does the procedure code need a modifier?

Thanks,

If the documentation supports billing the I&D of vulvar mass, go ahead and bill it. It doesn't matter if fluid came out or not. He still performed the procedure.

Thank you Tesja. I was thinking that but just wanted to be sure since the doctor did not bill for the procedure and I have to back to him to tell him he could bill for that.
