Is it appropriate to charge another E&M visit when someone returns on the same day with an allergic reaction to the medication that was prescribed earlier in the day? Are the two visits considered "related"? I can argue a case either way. Just wondering what others are doing in this situation.

Thanks!!!

You can't bill two E/M's on the same date. Whatever "work" that was done when the patient returned would be added to the "work" of the initial exam and the total of the two would be used to determine your E/M level. My guess is that since the patient returned due to the adverse effects, you probably have a 99214; but add it up.
