I am a Program Director for the Medical Billing & Coding program at the Glendale campus of Arizona College. As our Medical Billing and Coding (MBC) Program continues to grow, we are expanding our externship site partnerships to accommodate more opportunities for our students. Starting in 2024, we introduced a remote externship option specifically designed for medical billing companies, and it’s been very well received by both our students and our extern site partners.

As part of their graduation requirement, our students complete a 200-hour unpaid externship. They enter this phase with a strong foundation in billing theory and coding principles, and the externship allows them to apply this knowledge in a real-world setting. Many of our remote partners have found this to be an effective way to bring in extra support—particularly when onboarding new clients or testing out potential future hires. While there’s no obligation to hire, you may find that our externs are a great match for your team. In fact, from our most recent cohorts, over 80% secured employment after completing their externship—most in billing specialist roles.

We take great care to ensure that students placed in remote roles are prepared for success. Our remote externs are selected based on their professionalism, tech readiness, communication skills, and consistent engagement in both classroom and remote settings. We also review academic performance and Career Services involvement as part of the placement process.

If you're open to exploring how hosting a remote extern could benefit your team—or if you're looking to expand your hiring pipeline—we’d love to connect for a brief conversation.
