Some of our insurance companies do not credential physician assistants so we bill "incident to" the physician. For insurance companies that do credential our physician assistants we bill only the PA. What sometimes happens is that we bill the primary insurance with the PA but the secondary insurance does not recognize the PA. For many years my billing department was writing off the secondary amounts when this happens. Our administrator now wants us to print the secondary claims and change the provider from the PA to the doctor who was supervising the PA. Is this allowed? The rationale is that the secondary insurance company does not recognize the PA so we are forced to change the provider. Any thoughts????
