How would you bill for purchased podiatry supplies (toe pads, etc.) from a Podiatry company? These over-the-counter orthotics are being dispensed in the office are generally not covered by insurance carriers (medicare) and usually involve direct cash payment.

Would you still use L codes and collect the payments or would you use a supply code instead? Do you have to have a DME number to bill an L code if it is not going to the insurance company?

Here is what I found out. Our office will need to check with the distributor for the corresponding HCPCS code for these items. Once we have that information we will need to determine if any of the codes are bundled into the services. Next our office will need to apply for a DME license.
