I have been instructed to bill out under our Medical Director as the rendering and supervising provider, even though she isn't physically seeing the patient. The rationale is, many insurances companies (BCBS, Humana, Cigna) do not recognize lactation consultants as stand alone mid level providers. We bill the 994xx series which needs to be billed under a MD, DO, NP or PA and S9443 which is a non-physician provider code. My questions is, has anyone heard of a medical director rule or billing under the clinical supervision of the MD?
Not incident to as the physician is not onsite. Although perhaps this is a better option?
