Hello all! Hoping to get some insight regarding the following scenario for Botox. Provider orders 200 units of Botox via (2) 100 unit vials = 200 units. Office gets approval for 200 units. Provider only administers 100 units. The other vial was not used. Is the untouched 100 unit vial considered waste since it was ordered and approved by insurance? Thank you in advance.

No, you can’t bill for waste if the vial wasn’t used. Waste is only billed if part of the vial is used and the rest is discarded since it’s a single use vial it can’t be used on another patient. In your situation the unused vial could be used on another patient.

Thank you Shanamarie! Would the provider need to modify their order? The order reads 200 units. Wouldn't there still be a discrepancy from the order versus what was administered. Appreciate it

The order would not be modified. Should it matter (if you have an inventory system or another system where it would matter), the physician can make a note on the administration note that he elected to only use 100 of the 200 units ordered.
