Our podiatrist will amputate a bone and send a part of it to pathology, and he wants to bill for the amputation and the biopsy. I don't think you can code a biopsy on a bone that the physician has removed, but I can't find any resources to support this. Does anybody know where to find some clarification on this issue? Thank you!

More extensive procedure

Biopsy is performed and submitted for pathologic evaluation that will be completed after the more extensive procedure is performed, the biopsy is not separately reportable with the more extensive procedure. This is a general policy statement in Interventional Radiology coder manual.
