Hi alll you fabulous coders, I need a little guidance. A doc does a colonoscopy with a piecemeal biopsy (45380 ) then he ablates the rest of the same polyp with several passes of the biopsy forceps. The provider is changing the code to 45383 (ablation of polyp). I don't believe we can code out both since it is the same polyp but shouldn"t it be left at 45380? Any direction would be helpful. biopsy vs. polypectomy

Since the ultimate procedure is the ablation of the polyp, it is my understanding that you would code the polypectomy. If you take a bite of the polyp for biopsy, then ablate it, you would code only the ablation. If you biopsy a separate polyp or lesion elsewhere in the colon, you could code the biopsy with a -51 modifier. That is my understanding.
