How many SCS trials can be performed on a patient in their lifetime? Insurance: Medicare; State: Texas. I've reviewed both the LCD and LCA from Novitas, and did not see on whether or not the same patient can have another SCS trial by the same practice in their lifetime. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, is not covered unless the physician can demonstrate there were extenuating circumstances that caused the trial to fail. The MAC doesn't detail what constitutes an extenuating circumstance.

If a trial fails, a repeat trial is not appropriate unless there are extenuating circumstances that lead to trial failure.
