I passed my cpc exam on the first attempt in August and am still struggling to find a coding position. Any ideas would greatly help. Most places ask for 3-5 years experience and I've applied for them anyway, but just have not had any luck finding a coding position, even apprenticeship, nothing. Very frustrated and worried I spent time and money for a certification that won't benefit me as i though it would.

Try looking at other jobs in the physician office. Precert Clerk, Receptionist, billing Department AR follow-up. Sometimes you just have to get your foot in the door to show off your new skills. If you were in the Amarillo, Texas Area I know of several jobs.

I agree with tshannon - it can be helpful to expand your search to get a foot in the door in a coding-adjacent position.

Especially if you don't have prior experience in the healthcare industry. Any position that would get you hands-on in the EMR and A/R systems would make you more attractive overall as a candidate for a coding position, if you don't have any prior experience working in those applications.

I'd also suggest attending meetings for your local AAPC chapter - currently, most of them are virtual due to the pandemic, so that can make it even easier to attend. At the end of my chapter's meetings, we leave time for job announcements from any members who have positions open in their organizations. Not only can you hear any job announcements, but you'll also have the opportunity to network with coders in your area. That could also open some doors for you.

Good luck!

What does your resume look like? Generally, previous experience outside healthcare can be very valuable. Make sure your resume paints a picture of an employee who fits well into the role you're applying for.
It's difficult to get a coding position without any experience, but there are multiple other areas that are very relevant where you can get your foot in the door: scheduling, pre-authorization, medical records, billing, front desk representative, payment poster, charge entry specialist, or data entry specialist. It's easier to get promoted from within than to get hired from outside when it comes to the better-paying jobs.
Good luck!
