If the patient is scheduled for a cardiac cath and during the cath it is determined that the pt requires a stent is it allowable to bill for both the cath & the stent/stents? Thanks!

According to MedLearn's IR Coder, yes it is. If a diagnostic cath led to or determined a therapeutic procedure was necessary, the diagnostic portion is separately reportable.

However, if the stents or angioplasty were scheduled because of known coronary lesions, then a diagnostic cath is not billable, unless patient condition changes substantially.

Hope this helps.
