I am seeking some insight about temporary Category III codes. I know that they are not assigned fees by CMS and that they take extra work by provider to get them paid. I have talked to several coders who said they never and or have never billed them. If this is common, how does CMS gather data to eventually turn code into a permanent code. Is this truly the norm that many providers do not bill them. If there is someone who does bill them, how much trouble is it to get paid. Thank you in advance for any possible information on this.

CMS doesn't gather data to turn them into permanent codes; that goes through the CPT Editorial Panel. I've never billed them, but I do know that some payers including Medicare pay if there's a policy on file.
