Does anyone know if cough can be used as location when abstracting the HPI of an outpatient office visit.

I use it as Location-lungs. "Dry cough" would also include Quality. "Dry cough for 2 days more frequent when lying down" would get you Location, Quality, Duration and Context.

As a reference point: I asked the question directly to Medicare if hypertension could be used as location in the HPI and they said no. Cough may not be considered for location either. They really want "left" leg pain, "right" rib pain, left inguinal hernia, left lower quadrant abdominal pain, etc.

The contractors I've asked have not accepted 'inferred' location. Meaning you can't just infer that the location of depression is the brain, or the location of asthma is the lungs, or hypertension is the heart, etc. For some problems you can get a location (left knee or right thumb) but some you can't (diabetes.)
