Can a physician bill two units of code 29877 (chondroplasty) if procedures are performed in two different compartments of the knee (medial and patellofemoral)? No arthroscopy or other procedures were performed, only the chondroplasty.

This is from CPT Asst 2001:

Code 29877 describes smoothing of roughened or damaged cartilage surrounding one or more of the articular ends of the bones in the knee joint by debridement or shaving. This code should be reported only one time, regardless of how many areas are debrided or shaved

For same knee ,it should be billed once .If proceedure done on both knee Use mod 50.
