1. Does anyone have any written information on how to determine coder to physician ratio? I have 67 physicians and I'm needing to figure how many physicians should a coder be able to code for.

2. Does anyone have any written information as to an acceptable error rate for E&M coding for physicians. Does CMS or the OIG have anything in writing regarding acceptable error rates?

I think the coder ratio would depend on the coder's capabilities and the volume of provider services. Some are faster than others. For acceptable error rates, most carriers including cms use rat stats and they allow for 90% accuracy and a slight margin of error within that. AAPC had a good webinar to explain it on demand January 15, 2013.
