I am a CPC, CPMA and have been working as an internal auditor. A new family member just took over operations and has told me
that in addition to conducting internal audits, he expects me to work billing denials because I'm a CPC. I view this as a conflict of
interest. Am I right about that? Or do people function as both internally? Anyone have any ideas about how to view this?

With your credentials you have a strong foundation of skills that can qualify you to be able to work both. There is no conflict of interest. If you do not feel comfortable doing the billing denials then I would explain that to the employer. I would look at this offer in a positive way!
