My Director is interested in coding benchmarks to determine if we need another oncology coder. Does anyone have any information to share? These are series accounts for infusion and injection patients that also include provider visits throughout treatment.

If you Goggle there are a few articles on benchmark goals for outpatient vs inpatient coding of records. Currently, at my site it is surgery 30 a day, 13-15 for inpatient records and outpatient clinics settings are 70 a day. At another faciality worked in the past each coder tried to do between 80- 100 records a day just for outpatient, but the documentation was very good and each coder abstracted certain medical specialties not all differ medical services. Also each medical coder tech was assigned like 10 -15 physicians then coded their inpt. and outpt. records for the day. I believe once you ABSTRACT same medical specialties after awhile it get easier plus build relationship with doctors you assign medical codes for.
