Does anyone know the anser to this scenario. If a blood transfusion is started at one facility and then the patient is transferred to another facility who would be able to bill for it? The first one only, both or the second facility assuming the transfusions continue?

Is the transfusion happening before, during, and after the transfer non-stop? What code(s) are you looking at billing? Blood transfusions have an MUE of 1 no matter how many units are administered.

The facility that initiated the transfusion would bill and the other facility is just receiving the transfer of care. The receiving facility isn't actually doing any work (as in, to initiate and begin the service). When a transfer of care happens, the facility who is receiving the patient assumes all care from the initiating time forward.

Regarding the first facility, it doesn't matter that the service was transferred with regards to billing. There was one transfusion started and only 1 unit can be billed - this is with regards to the transfusion service ONLY.
