How do you code a newborn encounter for babies who were delivered by a COVID positive mother?
  • What to code if newborn has tested positive?
  • What to code if newborn has tested negative and COVID was ruled out?
    • Should P00.2 be coded? or should we assume possible exposure and code Z03? or code as confirmed exposure and code Z20? or should the testing just be coded as a screening code Z11?
How to code COVID during the neonatal or perinatal period?

If the newborn tests positive and physician documents COVID infection, report P00.2 and U07.1 (apparently, a rare case). If the newborn status is pending, report P00.2. If testing is negative and COVID ruled out, report Z05.1.

I don't think Z20.828, contact with and (suspected) exposure to other viral communicable diseases, is needed in addition to Z05.1 as it provides no further specificity.
