I am having trouble differentiating when to code spinal stenosis M48.0, versus the M99.7 and M99.5 codes.

If the report states "neuroforaminal narrowing C3-C4" -- does that offer enough for us to code as M99.71 "disc stenosis of intervertebral foramin"?

Same goes with "narrowing of the neural canal" -- is that enough to presume "intervertebral disc stenosis of the neural canal"

Thanks

Foraminal stenosis – These codes are classified to M99. Therefore, if other diagnosis are documented that are causing the formainal stenosis you will not report the formainal stenosis. There is a note in the ICD-10 book that says, “This category should not be used if the condition can be classified elsewhere”.

Foraminal narrowing – same as stenosis. The index states ‘Narrowing’ (See also Stenosis)
