I am new to coding for sepsis. Could someone please help me with coding the following:

Sepsis secondary to Providencia stuartii Urinary Track Infection with septic shock. The patient also has CKD, stage IV: Cr 1.66. Baseline 1.5-2.0. I would be so grateful for any help I could get.

Hello. I am also new to coding sepsis. This is how I would code it:

599.0 urinary tract infection
038.49 sepsis due to other gram negative organism
785.52 septic shock
995.92 sepsis w/organ dysfunction
585.4 ckd IV

There is also a section in the cpt guidelines that explains sepsis.
Hope this helps.

You need to read your ICD-9 CM guidelines with respect to sepsis and severe sepsis with organ dysfunction and how to sequence the codes. The guidelines are very clear in this area so you not have any problems. They are also located in the front of your code book.
