Good morning,

I am wanting to clarify something regarding coding Gastroparesis when the patient also has Diabetes. The documentation states Type 2 Diabetes- diet controlled. A separate part of the note documents Gastroparesis. I know under the coding guidelines that Gastroparesis is an assumed linkage with DM unless documentation states otherwise. In this scenario, would you agree in coding DM with Gastroparesis? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. The provider is out this week so I am unable to query.

No, I would not since the documentation from the provider does not state the linkage of DM and Gastroparesis. Our guidelines are just that, guidelines, and they are there to guide us but we have to look at the documentation. If the provider specifically stated a link to these 2 dx codes in his documentation then we can bill the linked dx code. However, if the provider states both issues seperatly then they are separate dx codes and we cannot link them. I hope this helps.
